5 Principles to planning an amazing Field Trip

An impactful field trip doesn’t happen by chance; it’s intentionally designed to extend learning beyond the classroom in meaningful and engaging ways.

Field trips should connect students to their community, spark curiosity, and deepen understanding through real-world experiences. They have the power to transform content from something students simply learn into something they actively experience.

To ensure every field trip reaches its full potential, it’s important to design experiences with intention. The following principles highlight what makes a field trip truly impactful, including how to create experiences that are engaging, equitable, and deeply connected to student learning.

  • Learning Happens Everywhere: Field trips extend instruction beyond the classroom, connecting academic content to authentic community contexts. How can you help your field trip connect what students learn in the classroom to the community outside of it?
  • Immersive Experiences: Hands on programming emphasize active participation, inquiry, and exploration to improve content retention and engagement. If possible, let students have agency, voice or choice in field trip activities.
  • Memorable and Meaningful: Experiences are designed to create lasting connections that motivate continued learning. Provide space and time for post-trip reflection, allowing students freedom in how they express themselves (i.e. writing, poetry, photography, music).
  • Aligned With Learning Standards and Outcomes: Each experience is grounded in clear learning objectives and ties directly to curriculum standards. Reach out to providers before your trip to ensure your learning standards connect with the upcoming experience.
  • Equity and Access: Participation is not limited by income, transportation, disability, or language barriers. Providers often have scholarships or discounted pricing to help make sure all students can attend. KC Field Trips also offers trip scholarships when possible.
